One of the Most Advanced Sludge Treatment Facilities We Have Delivered
- 3. februar 2025
The advanced sludge treatment facility at Hima Seafood’s aquaculture farm in Rjukan is now operational. This marks a significant step toward more sustainable aquaculture production.
Hima Seafood aims to become a global leader in the sustainable production of 9,000 tons of trout annually. The facility is built around Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), which reduce water consumption through purification and reuse.
Sludge as a Resource, Not Waste
A key part of Hima Seafood’s commitment to sustainability is the efficient treatment of sludge. Traditionally regarded as waste, sludge is a byproduct of production. However, with today’s technological advancements, it can be utilized as a valuable resource.
Sterner has developed a customized solution that includes thickening, dewatering, and sanitization of the sludge. The final product is a high-quality organic fertilizer that will be used in agriculture.
«By processing sludge into a useful resource, we help promote the circular economy and reduce environmental impact», says Karl Levinsen, Project Director at Eyvi, the main contractor for the project alongside Total Betong.
Setting a New Standard
Sterner has worked closely with Eyvi throughout the project to ensure a robust and energy-efficient solution. The technology combines drying and sanitization in a single process, meeting the requirements of fertilizer regulations. Additionally, residual heat from the sludge treatment process is used to heat the facility’s buildings, further optimizing energy use.
«This is one of the most advanced sludge treatment solutions we have delivered», says Trond Dahlen, Project Manager at Sterner. «The result is a comprehensive and sustainable process that not only meets Hima Seafood’s needs but also sets a new standard for the entire industry.»
A Bright Future for Sustainable Aquaculture
With the completion of this facility, Hima Seafood demonstrates how land-based aquaculture can be operated responsibly and sustainably. The investment in advanced technology and close collaboration with partners like Sterner has resulted in a facility that sets the benchmark for the future of aquaculture. Hima Seafood thus serves as a role model for how sustainability and innovation can go hand in hand in the development of global aquaculture.
«Sterner has been an exceptionally good partner, whose expertise and reliability have contributed to a project we are all proud to be part of», concludes Karl Levinsen from Eyvi.
